Westminster Edges Spalding in Down-to-the-Wire SLIAC Battle

1/11/2026 Fulton, MO - The Westminster women's basketball team picked up a dramatic 57–56 road victory over Spalding, improving to 4–9 overall and 4–1 in SLIAC play. 

The game was tightly contested from start to finish. After trailing 12–11 at the end of the first quarter, Westminster responded with a strong second period, scoring 20 points to take a 31–32 edge into halftime. Both teams matched each other in intensity through the third quarter, with the Blue Jays holding a slim 48–45 advantage heading into the final frame. 

In the fourth quarter, Westminster's defense came up big when it mattered most, holding Spalding to just 11 points. The Blue Jays were able to protect their narrow lead down the stretch and secure the one-point win in a thrilling finish. 

Gizelle Carreto and Deyja Mayes led the scoring for Westminster with 14 points each. Carreto added five rebounds, four assists, and three steals, while Mayes contributed six rebounds and two steals. Mariah Mayfield provided a spark off the bench with 12 points, knocking down two three-pointers and shooting efficiently from the field. Aly Bullock was a key presence on both ends of the floor, finishing with nine rebounds, four assists, and five blocks to go along with seven points. Westminster also held a strong advantage on the boards, outrebounding Spalding 42–30, which proved critical in the tightly contested matchup. 

The Blue Jays will return home for their next game on Wednesday, January 14, when they host Greenville at 5:30 p.m.
