8/30/25 Fulton, MO – Westminster women's volleyball wrapped up its opening weekend at the Virginia Wesleyan Tournament on Saturday, cruising past Randolph in straight sets before dropping a five-set battle to the Marlins.
In the first match, the Blue Jays controlled play from start to finish in a 25-17, 25-13, 25-12 sweep of Randolph. The offense was balanced, led by Paige Rowland's 11 kills on .381 hitting and Samantha Hansen's eight kills on a blistering .800 percentage. Katelynn Jackson chipped in nine kills and three blocks, while Meghan Nolte added four kills and three blocks. Landrey VanOverschelde directed the attack with 21 assists, and Haylie Schnake anchored the defense with 14 digs.
The Blue Jays returned to the court in the afternoon for a highly competitive matchup against host Virginia Wesleyan. After falling behind by two sets, Westminster stormed back with a 26-24 third set win and a 25-22 fourth set victory to force a decisive fifth. The Marlins, however, held off the Blue Jays' rally to edge out a 16-14 win in the final frame, handing Westminster its first loss of the year.
Four players tallied at least seven kills in the match, led by Hansen's eight kills and four blocks, Jackson's eight kills, and Nolte's seven kills. VanOverschelde ran the offense with 19 assists and five service aces, while Schnake steadied the defense with 25 digs.
Through the opening weekend, Westminster finishes 3-1 and showed both resilience and balance with contributions across the lineup. The Blue Jays now turn their attention to their home opener against Central Christian on September 3, 7:00 p.m.
