Westminster Women's Basketball Comes Up Short Against Spalding

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Westminster women's basketball dropped its third consecutive game, 67-53 to Spalding.

The Blue Jays fall to 7-12 overall and 5-6 in conference play.

"We did a much better job of playing competitively tonight," said Westminster Head Coach Tracey Braden. "We battled on the boards and did a much better job of staying with the game plan."

Westminster got out to an early lead with the first two baskets of the game coming from freshman Mikalyn Callahan. She scored six her 10 points in the first quarter, leading the Blue Jays to a 14-12 lead after 10 minutes of play.

The Golden Eagles came back in the second quarter to outscore Westminster 20-11, taking a 32-35 halftime lead.

Andrea Zalis took control in the third quarter to keep Westminster in the game, scoring 12 of the team's 17 points. Zalis led the team with 22 points.

The deficit was too large for the Blue Jays to overcome in the fourth quarter.

Zalis scored a game-high 22 points followed by Callahan's career-high 10 points. Mirrakohl Johnson led the game in rebounds with 12.

"I'm proud of Dre (Zalis)," said Braden. "The face-guarded her and pressured her all night and she kept her composure. She allowed the game to come to her and took advantage."

Westminster continues SLIAC play Saturday at home against undefeated MacMurray. The team will honors its two seniors, Zalis and Bailey Mitchell, after the game at 1 p.m.
