The Westminster Blue Jay softball team split with conference foe Webster University on Monday evening. The Blue Jays shut-out the Webster Gorloks 5-0 in game one, and sophomore Alyson Hahn broke the season shutout record from the mound. In game two, the Blue Jays and the Gorloks went into eight innings before Webster pulled out the 3-2 win. The Blue Jays are now 9-12 overall and 6-2 in conference play.
Game One
Sophomore Alyssa Johnson hit a RBI double to left center to score sophomore Kelsi Hill and get the Blue Jays on the board in the bottom of the first inning. They scored another run in the bottom of the second off a fielding error by Webster.
In the fourth inning, the Blue Jays grabbed four of their eight hits and the remaining three runs. Freshman Abby Bartley led-off with a double to center field, and sophomore Brittany Hodge smacked a double down the left field line to bring in Bartley. Hill then doubled to right center field, and freshman Amber Tepen brought both Hodge and Hill home with her single to left field.
Hahn (7-4) received the shutout win on the mound, breaking the season record with her fourth shutout victory. She pitched seven innings and struck out six.
Hill and Bartley led the offense with two hits each. Johnson led the defense with six putouts.
Game Two
The Blue Jays scored the first run of the second game in the third inning with Hill's RBI double to score freshman Kat Cooper. In the fourth inning, they added another run with Hahn's RBI single to left field, scoring Johnson.
In the fifth inning, Webster finally got on the board with a Blue Jay error. They added another run to tie the game in the sixth inning with a RBI single to right field.
The Blue Jays got into scoring position in the bottom of the seventh, but they were unable to move the runner, sending the game into the eighth inning.
With a runner placed on second and two outs, the Gorloks put the ball down the left field line to score the runner and take a one run lead.
The Blue Jays had to score in the bottom of the inning to either tie the game or win in, but three quick outs ended the game with a 3-2 loss.
Hahn pitched the compete second game, ending the day with 15 innings pitched. She struck out four in the second game.
The Blue Jays finished with four hits and two RBI. Bartley led the defense with 11 putouts.
The Blue Jays are back on the field on Thursday, April 9, with a conference doubleheader at Fontbonne University.
