Blue Jays Grab First Win Of Season, Split With Stephens

The Westminster softball team won their first game of the season with a 3-0 game one victory over Stephens College on Wednesday. They lost game two of the doubleheader, 11-4, to bring them to 1-6 on the season.

Game One

The first inning of game one was scoreless, but in the top of the second, sophomore Alyssa Johnson singled to second base. Sophomore Anne Baker came up to the plate and cracked a RBI double to left field to score Johnson, and on the throw, she advanced to third base. Sophomore Brittany Hodge then hit a two out RBI single to the pitcher to score Baker. 

The Blue Jays held the 2-0 lead, and in the top of the fifth, Hodge led off with a triple. She was brought in by a RBI single to shortstop by sophomore Kelsi Hill

The Blue Jays were unable to score again, ending the game with a 3-0 win over Stephens. 

The Blue Jays outhit the Stephens Stars 8-3, and Hill, Hodge and Johnson each went 2-3 from the plate. 

Sophomore pitcher Alyson Hahn (1-3) pitched the complete game and was credited with the win. She struck out eight and allowed no runs. 

 

Game Two

The Blue Jays acted as the home team in game two and started with three quick outs. In the bottom of the first, sophomore Bree Peterson led off with a walk. She was moved to second with Hill's sacrifice bunt and brought home with sophomore Allison Biggs' RBI double to centerfield. Biggs then came home on a passed ball to bring the Blue Jays up 2-0 at the end of one.

Stephens grabbed five hits and four runs in the second to take a 4-2 lead.

The Blue Jays tied up the game in the bottom of the third with a RBI double to left field from freshman Kim Morrison to score Johnson and a base hit by freshman Amber Tepen to score sophomore Anne Baker.

The game remained knotted at 4-4 until the fifth inning when Stephens' led off with a homerun over the right field fence. They scored again later in the inning off a wild pitch to take the 6-4 lead. 

The Stars added another run in the sixth and four more runs in the seventh to hold an 11-4 advantage over the Blue Jays. The Blue Jays looked to rally in the bottom of the seventh, and with two outs, Baker hit a single to right field. She stole second, but Morrison hit a line drive to third that ended the game.

The Blue Jays were outhit 18-6.

Freshman pitcher Abby Bartley (0-3) was credited with the loss. She pitched four innings and struck out five. 

 

The Blue Jays will find the field again next Tuesday for their first conference games with a doubleheader at Principia College. Game one will begin at 5:00 p.m.
